Varney Family Branch

I was able to find a great story about our ancestors who came over on the Mayflower click the link and learn more about it.

On the Varney side I have traced back to William Varney who was born from about 1598 to 1600 in England. He died before 1 Mar 1653/4 at the age of 56 in Ipswich, Essex, Massachusetts Bay Colony, British Colonial America.

The frequently seen assertion that William Varney was born in Middle Claydon, Buckinghamshire, England, seems to have come from (or at least have been perpetuated by) Collacott, who states that William "may have been" a relative to Thomas Verney, son of Sir Edmund Verney.  There is no evidence to support that assertion. In the Parish Registers for Middle Claydon there is no William Varney, nor is there any William Varney in the adjacent parishes of East Claydon and Steeple Claydon.

But we do know that William Varney and his family were in Ipswich by 13 November 1649, when he and his son-in-law Thomas Cooke were given permission to reside there. In 1652, William and his wife Bridget were given temporary custody of their grandson, until the next meeting of the court in Ipswich, implying that William and Bridget were still living in Ipswich at that time.

The reasoning of William's death of 1653/4 is because his estate was entered into probate on the 1st of March of 1654. Administration of the estate was given to his widow Bridget, with specific bequests made to his unnamed three sons and one daughter.
