HESS FAMILY LINEAGE
Hess or Hesse is our surname, and I always thought that it was of German descent, it probably is but back then there wasn't a German or French it was called Deutschland.
Jacob Hess declared when he applied for his pension from the War, that he came into the United States with General Rochambeau the French General who came into the United States during the Revolutionary War in aid of this country; that he served at the seige of Little York and was at the taking of Cornwallis; that he was taken to Charlotte Courthouse in this state to winter there; that he preferred this land of liberty to the country which gave him birth, and submits his claim to the liberality of the court. He served two years as well as he recollected.
Look at the map and see where our ancestors originated from, it is on the border of France and Germany and this area was fought over for many years going back and forth. I know that after searching many years on this side, I happily found this information. I come from a line that I am proud of. Many years I wondered about the Hess name and its relationships with the Nazi party. But our Ancestor decided a different fate for him and his family.
The Hess family is also on the Varney side of my family. My grandmother's mother was Celia Hess.

I also found looking back through my family that the Hess and Thacker's were close in relation to one another, My Papa Hess' Mother, Mercy Vine was a Thacker and her and my MaMa were related.
So that means the Hess family are related to two sides of my family, the Varney and the Thacker side.
Jacob and his wife, Anna Elizabeth Moser came to settle in Pike County Kentucky and there they were buried.
I'll keep adding to this, because I think this side intrigued me so much because I had to search through so many names, but I finally made all the connections. And I found out this side has a long line of Patriots who fought and served in Armed Services. My 3rd great grandfather, James Harvey Hess served in the Civil War. I will tell you more about that in the future. Keep checking back.
The gravestone below was laid in honor of Jacob serving in the Revolutionary War.
Bavaria is where our Hess ancestors and Elizabeth Moser's family came from. Researching this area there is much information about the beginnings of it going back to the Roman Empire, and through the centuries how it changed and formed into being not just a people once called Bohemians, but to a nation.
The Binggeli or Binkele Branch
The Binggeli-Binckley-Binkley family left Switzerland after years of religious trials and hardship where those who stood against the government and Catholic church were punished again and again. Like many others they sought freedom for life, their skills and trades as well as their right to faith here in this new budding country.
- Johann Binggeli or also known as John Binkley, was born in 1695 in Switzerland. Died in 1757 at the age of 62 in Lampeter, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
John came to America with his brother, Peter. John and his wife, Barbara were parents of at least 9 discovered children. His brother Johann Peter Binggeli or also known as Peter Binkley, the next descendent in our family lineage, was the first ancestor to immigrate to Early America. He is my sixth Great Grandfather and in 2021, Ed and I took a road trip to North Carolina to visit his gravesite.
He married Anna Maria Salome Magdalen Von de Wiel they were married on 2 Feb 1725 in Steinthal, Alsace, France.
Anna Maria Salome Magdalen Von de Wiel also known as Anna Maria Wehrli was born on 28 Oct 1704 in Steinthal, Alace, Switzerland. Died on Sep 1748 at the age of 43 in Codorus, York County, Pennsylvania.
After Anna Maria died Peter and Anna Margarethe Geiger were married on 3 Feb 1749 in York, Pennsylvania.
Anna Margarethe Geiger was born on 18 Jan 1722 in Baden, Bavaria. She died on 10 Feb 1803 at the age of 81 in Bethania, Forsyth, North Carolina.
In 1753 the Moravians had purchased nearly 100,000 acres of land
in North Carolina. They called this trace Wachau, later Wachovia; and it was to
Wachovia that Peter moved.
He settled on a farm three miles from the Moravian community of Bethania (then in Stokes County, now in Forsyth County). On September 30, 1771, Peter posted a bond to guarantee that he would resell the 307 acres he had purchased only to a Moravian.
I learned a lot about the Moravian Church, one that I didn't know anything about until I found my ancestor. And I am so grateful that the members were great at documenting everything. That is how we are so lucky to learn so much about Peter Binkele.
Peter himself did not fight in the Revolutionary War, however he traveled near and far to supply the forces with the goods needed for their efforts. Peter did have three sons, Adam, Frederich and Peter who fought in the Revolutionary War.
Daughter of Anna Maria Wehrli and Peter, Sara Binckele, the next descendent in our family lineage, married Johann Leonhard Moser, they were married about May 1746 in Frederick, Maryland.
Johann Leonhard Moser, son of Adam Moser and Elisabetha Wollinger, was born on 12 Jan 1710 in Großulrichshausen, Wörnitz, Ansbach, Bavaria. He immigrated on 23 Sep 1732 to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was naturalized on 9 Sep 1761. Johann Died on 16 Jul 1782 at the age of 72 in Surry, North Carolina. He was a Weaver and Pastor of the Church. They are my fifth great grandparents and the parents of Elizabeth Moser, Jacob Hess' wife.
Jacob's parents, Johann Valentin Heß was born in 1720 in Alsace, France. He was buried on 6 Jan 1791 in Nußdorf, Landau, Pfalz, Bayern,
Bavaria. He married Anna Apollonia Hochstein, born about 1725 in Alsace, France. Date and place of death
