The Blair Connection

The Thacker's I have found come from a very historical lineage. This one is the most exciting I think because I can trace them as far back to Sir John Francis De Blare, who was born about 1138 in Barony of Blair, Ayrshire, Scotland.

Yes, we come from that Blair family, which is very well documented and information about them easily found. It is with Elizabeth Blair, pictured here, who came to be our ancestor when she married John M. Chaney, who was born about 1793 in Virginia. He died on 6 Feb 1856 at the age of 63 in Amador, California.  

Elizabeth Blair was born on 7 Apr 1801 in Rowan, North Carolina. She died on 5 Feb 1878 at the age of 76 in Collinwood, Meeker, Minnesota. She was buried in Pigeon Lakechaney Baptist Cemetary, Meeker, Minnesota.

She was the daughter of Jacob W. Blair II who was born about 1767 in Big Lehigh, Northampton, Pennsylvania. He died about 1862 at the age of 95 in Blair Ridge, Nora, Buchanan, Virginia. He was buried at Lick Creek Cemtery in Birchleaf, Dickenson, Virginia. 

Her Mother, Margaret Walker known as Peggy, she and Jacob W. Blair II were married about 1787 in Big Lehigh, Northampton, Pennsylvania.

Margaret was born in 1770 in Montgomery, Virginia. She died in 1868 at the age of 98 in Caney Ridge, Buchanan, Virginia. She was buried in 1868 in Clintwood, Dickenson, Virginia. 

Elizabeth was their first born of seven children.  Elizabeth married John around 1817 in Russell, Virginia.  They had the following children:

  3. Charles J. Chaney (1825-1900)
  4. Jacob Chaney (1826-1878)
  5. Elizabeth Chaney (1827-1902)
  6. George Washington Chaney (1831-1891)

  8. Sarah Virginia Cheney (1834-1909)
  9. William Preston Chaney (1836-1915)

Charles J. Chaney, our next descendent in the family, was born in Jul 1825 in Russell, Virginia. He died about 1900 at the age of 75 in Pike, Kentucky.

My grandmother told me she thought her family came from Grundy, Virginia which would be in the vicinity of Russell County Virginia, below is a map of that area.  Charles would have been the first of the Thackers to migrated to Pike County Kentucky.

Charles J. Chaney and Elizabeth Fletcher were married on 9 Dec 1847 in Pike, Kentucky. Elizabeth Fletcher was born in 1832 in Pike County, Kentucky. She died 1852/1860 in Pike County, Kentucky. Charles J. Chaney and Elizabeth Fletcher had the following children:

  1. John Lewis Chaney was born on 14 Dec 1849 in Pike, Kentucky. He died on 3 Dec 1935 at the age of 85 in Pike, Kentucky, United States. He was buried at Coburn Mountain in Huddy, Pike, Kentucky.
  2. Sarah Chaney was born in 1850 in Kentucky.

Charles J. Chaney and Elizabeth Slone were married on 24 Apr 1853 in Pike, Kentucky. Elizabeth Slone was born about 1825 in Pike, Kentucky. She died on 4 Jun 1913 at the age of 88 in Pike County Kentucky. Elizabeth was buried in Bevins Cemetery Millard, Pike County, Kentucky. Charles J. Chaney and Elizabeth Slone had the following children:

Thomas G. Chaney Jr., our next descendent in our family on the Hess side, him and Amanda G. Adkins were married on 17 Jan 1875 in Pike County, Kentucky. Amanda G. Adkins, daughter of William Adkins and Anna Thacker, was born in May 1855 in Kentucky. She died on 22 Nov 1917 at the age of 62 in Pike County, Kentucky. Amanda was also known as Mandy. She was buried in Slone Cemetery. Thomas G. Chaney and Amanda G. Adkins had the following children

  1. Charlie Chaney was born in Dec 1876 in Kentucky. He died in 1930 at the age of 54 in Fish Trap, Pike, Kentucky.
  2. Annie Chaney was born in Apr 1879 in Pike, Kentucky. She died on 28 Apr 1948 at the age of 69 in Fishtrap, Pike, Kentucky.
  3. Elizebeth Chaney was born in Sep 1881 in Kentucky. 

Annie Chaney, our next descendent in our family on the Hess side, she and James Harvey Hess were married on 14 Aug 1900 in Pike, Kentucky. James Harvey Hess was born on 10 Jul 1836. He died on 14 Sep 1923 at the age of 87 in Millard, Pike, Kentucky. Annie Chaney and James Harvey Hess had the following children:

James Frank Hess was Annie's stepson, Frank's wife died young and Annie and James his father raised Minnie his daughter.  Frank was born on 3 Mar 1863 in Virginia, United States. He died on 3 Mar 1924 at the age of 61 in Pike, Kentucky.  Minnie Hess was born in 1903 in Pike, Kentucky.  She died in 1940 at the age of 37 in Kemper, Pike.

Charley Hess, the next descendent in our family on the Hess side, he was born in 1902 in Pike, Kentucky. Charley died on 11 May 1943 at the age of 41 in Fishtrap, Pike, Kentucky.

Charley Hess and Mercy Vine Thacker were married on 11 Mar 1920 in Fishtrap, Pike, Kentucky. Mercy Vine Thacker, daughter of Jasper Thacker and Emily Thacker, was born on 16 Mar 1896 in Pike, Kentucky. She died on 5 Jan 1980 at the age of 83 in Pike, Kentucky. Mercy was buried January 7, 1980 at the The Ramsy Cemetery, Fishtrap, KY in Pike County. Charley Hess and Mercy Vine Thacker had the following children:

  1. James Harvey Hess (1922-2007)
  2. Martha J Hess (1929-2011)
  3. Jasper Hess (1933-1944)
  5. George W. Hess (1934-2006)

James Harvey Hess, my grandfather is the next descendent in our family on the Hess side, he was born on 24 Jun 1922 in Fishtrap, Pike, Kentucky. He died on 6 May 2007 at the age of 84 in Pikeville, Pike, Kentucky. He was buried at Justice Cemetery in Kimper, Pike, Kentucky.

Nancy Chaney, the next descendent in our family on the Thacker side, she was born on 2 Feb 1860 in Pike County, Kentucky.  She died on 21 Apr 1930 at the age of 70 in Pike County, Kentucky. She was buried in Kimper, Pike, Kentucky. 

Nancy Chaney and John Thacker were married on 19 Apr 1877 in Pike, Kentucky, United States. John Thacker, son of Randolph Thacker and Martha Adkins, was born on 12 Apr 1840 in Kentucky. He died on 14 Apr 1927 at the age of 87 in Pike, Kentucky. He was buried on 16 Apr 1927 in Elkhorn City, Pike, Kentucky. Nancy Chaney and John Thacker had the following children:

  3. Jeff Thacker (1888-1964)

Charles Thacker, our next descendent in our family on the Thacker side, he was born on 2 Dec 1882 in Pike, Kentucky. He died on 26 Jan 1941 at the age of 58 in Pike, Kentucky. He was buried at Phillips Cemetery in Kimper, Pike, Kentucky.

Charles Thacker and Mary Darthula Pinion were married on 23 Dec 1907 in Pike, Kentucky. Mary Darthula Pinion, daughter of Roland Pinion and Elizabeth Harmon, was born on 24 Dec 1893. Mary died on 12 May 1963 at the age of 69. She was buried at Phillips Cemetery in Kimper, Pike County, Kentucky. Charles Thacker and Mary Darthula Pinion had the following children:

She died on 30 Jun 1987 at the age of 68 in Lexington, Fayette, Kentucky. Nancy was buried at Justice Family Cemetery located on Long Fork in Kimper, Pike, Kentucky, United States.
